Capturing an Iconic Image in Outdoor Photography

Steve Kossack
Duration:   3  mins

In the world of photography, there are certain iconic scenes favored by veteran landscape photographers. In this video, professional outdoor photographer Steve Kossack takes you to northern Arizona to photograph Horseshoe Bend on the Colorado River.

Just past sunrise, Steve sets up his camera on a 1,500-foot cliff. With a 20mm lens, he frames the flowing river, the beach below, and the lip of the cliff. He makes an exposure without a filter, then adds a graduated neutral density filter for dramatic lighting and colors. To capture a single iconic image, Steve also demonstrates that shooting many exposures is the best approach.
