Easy Serger Project: How to Sew Baby Leggings

Holly Willis
Duration:   15  mins

Baby leggings are a quick and easy project you can complete in no time. Holly Willis shows you how to construct the leggings from start to finish using both a serger and a conventional sewing machine.

Construction

To start sewing her baby leggings, Holly shows you how to use a serger to stitch the inner seams on both leg pieces. She explains what direction she likes to stitch the legs in, and also why it is important to stitch both legs the same. While using her serger Holly uses small clips rather than pins to hold the fabric in place. She explains that clips can be easier and safer than pins.

After both legs of the baby leggings are serged, Holly shows how to slip one leg inside the other and align the crotch seam. Baby leggings, much like other pants, will be slightly higher in the back than in the front so it is important to make sure you have the legs aligned before stitching. Holly then shows how to clip the pieces together, how to deal with the overlapping crotch seam, and how to serge it.

Finishing

Once the baby leggings have been serged the final steps are to add elastic to the waistband and finish the lower legs. Holly shows how to attach elastic to the waistband by marking both the leggings and the elastic into four equal sections. Once the elastic is serged, Holly shows how to turn it to the wrong side and finish using a conventional sewing machine.

While Holly shows how to use a serger for most of the construction, she shows how to do the finishing of the baby leggings on a sewing machine with a twin needle. By using a twin needle she can mimic the look of a serger stitch on the wrong side, with two lines of stitch on the right side that can accommodate the stretching of the leggings.
