How to Make a Crochet Chain
Corrina FergusonDescription
Having a few crochet techniques in your knitting toolbox is important. Being able to work something like a simple crochet chain is useful for things like decorative bind offs, provisional cast ons, and adding embellishments to your knitting. In this video, Corrina Ferguson explains how to work a crochet chain.
Corrina begins by showing a completed crochet chain and explaining the construction. One side of the crochet chain looks like a braid. The back of the chain has bumps. Both sides can be useful in knitting, depending on how you want to work your knitting needle into the crochet chain.
Placing a slip knot onto the crochet hook, Corrina gets ready to make the chain by holding the hook in her right hand. The working yarn is held in her left hand, with the yarn coming over her left forefinger. She works the crochet chain as follows:
1. Yarn over, by bringing the yarn under the hook from left to right.
2. Turn hook to catch the yarn and pull through the stitch on the hook. This creates 1 chain stitch.
Steps 1 and 2 are repeated as needed to create a crochet chain.
