How to Work a Latvian Braid

There are so many ways that you can add extra texture and pizzazz to your knitting project. The Latvian braid is a technique that adds both texture and color. Corrina Ferguson shows you how to work this interesting two-color braid in this video.

LATVIAN BRAID

As Corrina demonstrates, the braid is created after a foundation row of knit stitches is worked on the right side of the work. The Latvian Braid is then worked as follows:

– Wrong Side: Purl 1 stitch with Main Color, Purl 1 stitch with Contrasting Color to end

– Right Side: Purl each stitch in the same color as the stitch on the needle, bringing the yarn to be used up and over the other yarn, twisting the yarn to create the first half of the braid

– Wrong Side: Knit each stitch in the same color as the stitch on the needle, bringing the yarn to be used up and over the other yarn, twisting the yarn to create the second half of the braid

Once complete, you have a beautiful decorative detail on your knitting project. This braid can be used on a wide variety of projects, including shawls, hats, and mittens.
