Knitting a Ruffle

There are so many different edgings that you can work onto your knitting project. Ruffles are a sweet little detail that is perfect for any project, from fancy sweaters to easy baby hats. In this video, Corrina Ferguson, demonstrates how to knit ruffles and she shows you how to knit both decreasing and increasing ruffles.

DECREASE RUFFLES

A knitting pattern that contains decreasing ruffles will already tell you the rate in which you need to decrease the fabric. In the video, Corrina demonstrates a common way to work a decrease ruffle but decreasing 3 stitches to 1 stitch across the row.

To begin, have 3 times the number of stitches that you need for your project. Knit a few rows in Stockinette stitch (knit on Right Side/purl on Wrong Side), then decrease on the Right Side of the work by working sk2p (slip 1 stitch, knit two stitches together, pass the slipped stitch over) decreases all the way across the row. This decrease takes three stitches and turns it into a single stitch. The decrease ruffle has been created. Typically, one more Wrong Side row will be worked and then you’re ready to work the rest of the pattern.

INCREASE RUFFLES

A knitting pattern that contains increasing ruffles will already contain the information for the rate of increase for that particular ruffle. If you’d like to add a ruffle to any project, Corrina shows you how to work an increase ruffle, where you take one stitch and increase it to three stitches.

To begin, you’ll work increases into every stitch across a Right-Side row. The Knit, Yarn Over, Knit (kyok) increase is used in the example. Using this increase for every stitch in the row yields three times the number of stitches you started with. Work a Wrong Side row in purl and continue to work Stockinette stitch (knit on Right Side/purl on Wrong Side) for a few rows before binding off.
