Palette Knife Floral Texture

Duration:   32  mins

Palette knives have been used to create museum worthy art throughout history by famous painters like Vincent Van Gogh and Claude Monet. Today, cake artists are trading in the oil-based paints for edible buttercream and applying those same techniques to cakes. Come along with cake designer Rachael Teufel as she shows you just how easy it is to create a gorgeous buttercream cake using a few inexpensive palette knives.

Starting on a flat surface, Rachael teaches you how to load the proper amount of buttercream on one or both sides of a palette knife to create different effects. She demonstrates the proper angles, pressure, and rotation needed to create basic leaves, stems, and petals. Along the way, she encourages you to let go of all your perfections and play with abstract shapes.

Included are tips on blending colors to create multi-tone elements, applying multiple colors within the same leaves and petals to create depth and visual interest, and how to easily fix or remove mistakes. Once you feel comfortable, grab a pre-iced cake and join Rachael as she walks you through an ivy wreath adorned with a large closed tulip, two-tone daisy, and small hydrangea-like blossoms. Practice makes perfect in this easy cake decorating technique! Grab a palette knife and embrace your inner artist with an abstract floral design on your next cake!
