Patchy Light in Outdoor Photography

When you photograph vibrant autumn leaves, you often encounter patchy light from the dappling sun. Professional shooter Jim Zuckerman takes you to Massachusetts where he photographs an old tree and makes suggestions about patchy light.

Jim uses his telephoto lens to frame the gray-textured tree surrounded by red and yellow leaves, a pattern that results in a colorful image. He overcomes the patchy light by carefully balancing his exposure. “But the ideal shooting plan is not to include patchy light at all,” he recommends.
