Photographing Wildlife in Maine

Maine’s northern ponds are refuges for the exquisite loon. But it isn’t easy photographing these fast-moving birds.

In this video, outdoor photographer Doug Gardner breaks his own rules as he photographs a pair of loons and their chicks with a 500mm lens without the aid of a tripod. He tracks the loons in a canoe and goes handheld by resting the big telephoto lens on his knee. Since the loons are constantly on the move, he shoots at a very high shutter speed and captures amazing close-ups of these colorful birds.
