A lightweight scarf with a hidden pocket is the perfect accessory to make when traveling. The pocket can be used to stash your passport, other identification or cash and be easily accessible. Nicki LaFoille shows you step-by-step how to make this easy accessory.

Travel Scarf

Nicki starts by explaining what supplies you will need to make the travel scarf, which includes a lightweight fabric, a zipper for the pocket and optional snap tape for making the straight scarf into an infinity scarf. Nicki talks about the type of fabric she chose to use for this project and why, and shows what size rectangle you will need to make the travel scarf, though this can easily be made larger or smaller.

Nicki then walks you through step-by-step how to make the zipper pocket that will be attached to one edge of the travel scarf. She explains how to shorten the zipper, if needed, and explains what type of zipper is best to use if this step is needed. She then shows how to sew the pocket in place and then how to finish the fabric edges.

Given how lightweight the fabric is, Nicki shows that using a rolled hem foot to sew a narrow hem is the easiest way. She shows how to use the foot and also how to use a small piece of tissue paper to help get the fabric roll started, if needed. The last step in finishing up this travel scarf is to add some snap tape to the ends to turn it into an infinity scarf if desired.
