Half Double Crochet

The half double crochet stitch is a stitch whose height is between a single crochet and double crochet. The way this stitch is constructed makes it a very quick and easy stitch to create. In this video, Mary Beth Temple demonstrates how to work the half double crochet stitch.

The half double crochet is typically abbreviated in patterns as “hdc.” Mary Beth is working the half double crochet stitches into the next stitch on her swatch, working under both legs of the V on the top of the stitch. She notes that a pattern will indicate where the double crochet stitch should be worked. To create the stitch, she follows these steps:

1. Yarn over, from back to front
2. Insert hook into stitch from front to back
3. Yarn over and draw through a loop (3 loops on hook)
4. Yarn over and draw through all three loops (1 loop remains on the hook and half double crochet stitch has been repeated)

Mary Beth repeats this process and works several more stitches in half double crochet.
