Creative Ways to Capture Vastness

Layne Kennedy
Duration:   7  mins

You can add an interesting element to your outdoor or nature shots by capturing the vastness of a scene. Photographer Layne Kennedy provides tips on lighting, shoot elevation, and focus to capture a vast scene.

A vast and beautiful scene, such as a valley or lake, is easier to take in with your eyes than with a camera, but in this session you can learn creative ways to capture vastness. An image like this is great for an establishing shot for an editorial shoot, photographer Layne Kennedy says as he shoots a lake scene. Layne explains how to use lighting, increase shooting elevation, and add dimension and focus on nuances to create a wonderful, vast landscape.

He points out, too, that vastness doesn’t have to be large. A tiny lone orchid is within vastness if you zoom out to show its surroundings.
