Night Photography

Layne Kennedy
Duration:   11  mins

Nightfall doesn’t have to mean quitting time for the outdoor nature photographer. Layne Kennedy offers tips and ideas for creative nighttime photography shots.

When the brilliant shades of sunset leave the horizon, the photo ops aren’t quite over for the photographer on a wilderness expedition. Using the last dregs of light as your background, you can use other light sources to provide nuances and highlights.

In this session, photographer Layne Kennedy starts a fire and uses his camera’s timer to take a long-exposure shot as he bounces light from his flashlight around in his small tent. The result is a cozy, warm nighttime shot with just a bit of illumination on the horizon of the lake beyond. Layne also dons a headlamp to create motion swirls of color and light and invites a guest to pose for a silhouette.
