Duration:   25  mins

Description

Patchwork projects are a great way to incorporate multiple colors into one project. Tara Rex shows you how to make a table runner with fun patchwork sections.

Mix & Match

Tara shows how patchwork is not only a fun way to add lots of different colors to a piece but is also a great fabric scrap project. She shows how small strips or pieces of fabric can be stitched together without having to measure and cut out precise pieces. Tara also demonstrates a technique known as chain piecing that can be used to save time when sewing together many small pieces. Once several strips of fabric have been sewn together, Tara shows how the strips can be trimmed and then stitched together to make the larger sections used in the table runner.

Dimensions

The finished length and width are something you need to consider when learning how to make a table runner. Tara explains that a general rule of thumb for determining a table runner length is 12” longer than the table. This will ensure that there is enough runner to hang over the table edge on each end. The width of the runner can vary and is based on personal preference. Patchwork sewing is a great technique to use in order to easily piece together small fabric sections to achieve a desired finished dimension.

Layering

Tara shows how to assemble the patchwork sections with large pieces of print fabric to create the finished design. Once the table runner top is completed, Tara shows how to make a table runner that is layered with fusible fleece or batting. Using a product like insul-fleece in a table runner can help protect the surface underneath if hot plates or dishes are set on the runner. Layering the table runner also gives you the opportunity to use a different fabric color on the back of the runner to make it reversible.
